With trendy coffee shops, pristine ocean, outback desert, unique wildlife, delicious beer, and a plethora of adventure activities, there’s almost no place better to go backpacking than Australia.
It was the first country I traveled solo, and I spent 15 months backpacking and working my way through the cities, beaches, small towns, and outback of what is now one of my favorite places on earth. If you’re planning to go backpacking, you don’t want to miss the best backpacker cities in Australia.
I hadn’t heard of Yamba, thanks for sharing your secret, Jeremy! Fremantle looks very cool too
Ohhh Yamba is my favorite! I hope you can make it someday 🙂
Hi Jeremy,
Way cool! I loved Sydney when we visited, and we barely made it out of the airport lol…..it vibed with me big time so I reckon heading into town would have been a blast. Gotta stop by for more than a day or 2 next time. Each city looks like a fab stay; if we weren’t heading back to New Jersey after Bali, Oz would be calling 😉
Ryan
Ah what a shame! I hope you can make it there for longer than a day or two next time. Australia is an amazing place to be.
Awesome suggestions and writing! Thanks for carrying the torch, look forward to being out there myself.
Cheers,
Stephen
Thanks, Stephen! I hope you can make it someday.
My favourite was by far Melbourne…. 🙂 LOVE YOUR PHOTOS!
Totally agree on Byron Bay and Fremantle, awesome places with so many things to do!! 🙂 But I haven’t heard about Yamba yet, really want to check it out next time I fly to Australia!
Bookmarked this! I move to Aus on the work holiday visa in September. I was thinking about living in Melbourne although I know both Melbourne and Sydney are on the top 10 list of most expensive cities in the world. I’m completely a city girl also but I’m open to any suggestions you might have about where to live for the year (or part of the year)!
I vote Melbourne 😉
Lots of great information here! We have a few friends that worked at a hostel in Byron Bay for a while, and had really great things to say about the area. Ive never been to Australia, but hope to one day. My husband went for a trip there with his high school rugby team and loved it.
Byron Bay is my favourite probably because I’ve always been a bit of a hippy! 😉
Hey!
We missed Yamba! :/
But loved Byron, such a laid-back vibe, felt like we were out of the hustle and bustle, nestled next one of the best coast-lines we’ve experienced so far in Oz for sure!
That jail hostel looks a must see!
Did you check out Katoomba and the Blue mountains at all?
I love Byron! I didn’t make it to Katoomba, unfortunately, but the Blue Mountains are beautiful!
Surely, the Sunshine Coast has got to make that list! A great spot for backpackers. Thanks for the info though. Great article!
Love the Sunny Coast!
Please stop telling the world about Yamba. Too many people know about it now.
Great List dear! My first Australian travels were limited to Byron Bay, Hobart & Sydney. I’ve heard other people say Hobart isn’t their thing but it was my favourite. I was from a small town, I just love it and the people were so friendly. I also have become a fan of Sydney, Byron Bay.
Interesting blog! The Great Barrier Reef is my favorite and it is blessed with the breathtaking beauty of the world’s largest coral reef. Thanks for all good resources and keep it up.
Hey, there, I really enjoyed your backpacker cities! There Have so many bloggers who don’t put any personality into their posts. But You are different.
Amazing and informative blog about Australia! It’s my dream country and really want to enjoy what you add to your blog. By the way, what is the best time to go there? And thanks for this amazing blog
This March I will be taking a greyhound from Melbourne to Cairns. We will be stopping in Launceston, Tasmania for a few days, Byron Bay for a few, Agnes Water, Hervey Bay, and Townsville!! Very Excited. Thanks for the article!
So many great things to see! Have an amazing time!
In my opinion, nothing comes close to Sydney! I enjoyed Melbourne but it reminded me of Europe too much!
Haha maybe that’s why I liked it ?
But wanna comment that you have a very decent site,
I like the style it really stands out.
You made a number of good points there. I did a search on the
topic and found the majority of people will agree with your blog.
Right here is the right webpage for anybody who hopes to find out about this topic.
You realize a whole lot its almost hard to argue with you
(not that I personally would want to?HaHa). You certainly
put a new spin on a subject which has been written about for decades.
Wonderful stuff, just excellent!
Man Yamba looks awesome! Glad you told us about it hehe
